In 1957, Gaston Berger, philosopher and industrialist, founded with the rector Jean Capelle, the first INSA in France in Lyon. Driven by a philosophical model of humanistic engineering education, they aspired to build a school aimed at training engineers capable of providing contemporary solutions to societal challenges. Engineers who think and act, “philosophers in action.” Welcoming, integrating and supporting diverse audiences is one of the fundamental elements of its model.

Created by the artist Jean-Marc Bonnard, the Rhino has been the emblem of INSA Lyon since 2003. Standing calmly on the lawn in front of the Humanities building, it sparks the students’ creativity and changes its appearance according to their mood and campus events: our Rhino has been through a lot!
In 2017, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fine arts studies section, students created the new-generation Rhino installed on the lawn.

The department « Formation initiale aux métiers d’ingénieur », commonly known as “FIMI”, is a bridge from the high school to the engineering student status. The « FIMI » department is characterized by the teaching of a high-level scientific, technical, and humanistic culture which constitutes the essential basis for any engineer. Through a common scientific base, each student receives general training in fundamental areas: mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, computer science, design, production, and human sciences.

Concerned with maintaining openness in all areas, INSA Lyon allows students to pursue or initiate artistic activities during their engineering studies. There are 5 possible artistic sections: Fine Arts, Cinema, Dance, Music, and Theatre.

Catering is provided 7 days a week in 4 restaurants, serving approximately 1,000,000 meals each year. Since 2015, the Restaurants Office has been implementing a quality and sustainability initiave, incorporating a vegetarian menu, prioritising fresh seasonal products and local supply chains, and reducing the use of processed industrial products in favor of meals prepared directly at INSA.

The campus also has significant accommodation capacities with its 11 residences. Two of them has double rooms and are reserved for first-year students. And seven traditional residences offer housing for living alone or in shared accommodation.

Sports are an essential part of INSA engineers’ education. We believe that sports contribute to personal development and play an importante role in forming creative, open, and innovative engineers.

Students can choose between traditional physical and sports activities classes and specialized practices – offered by the Sports Association, provided they meet the required level. Students with partial aptitude are directed towards adapted practice classes.

At the heart of the Lyon Tech-La Doua campus, the Marie Curie library covers an area of 3,800 m², with 600 seats. Opened in 2009, it provides conditions for learning, creativity, innovation, and research through its extensive documentary collection in Engineering Sciences and Humanities, its study environment, and information research support services.

François Gabart, an INSA Lyon engineer, is one of France’s greatest skippers.

Since 1981, INSA Lyon has had a High-Level Sports Section. Its goal is to allow young high-level athletes on ministerial lists to pursue both their high-level sports career and their engineering degree, thanks to schedule adjustments and extended programs.
Sophia Bouderbane in judo, Jonathan Coeffic in rowing, Fanny Gibert in climbing, and Jean-Christophe Perraud in cycling are also engineers from INSA Lyon.

The 24 Hours of INSA Lyon is the largest student music festival in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with approximately 50,000 expected spectators over a weekend! It revolves around 3 poles: 24 hours of races, daytime activities, and evening concerts.

A rich associative life, with its 130 student associations, is a real strength of INSA Lyon. These associations are oriented towards technical, cultural, humanitarian, sports, or festive activities. They provide opportunities for students to relax, socialize, and also engage, allowing them to learn from one another.
